Message from Ms. Kranz: 3 Weeks Until School Starts!
Dear Ogden East Learning Community,
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I am honored to return as Head of School (Assistant Principal) of the East Campus! While last year was exciting because everything at Ogden was new for me, this year I am bursting with anticipation knowing that soon I will again be working with wonderful teachers, connecting with supportive parents and leading initiatives to make Ogden East a place where every child finds joy in learning and is supported to reach their maximum potential. I imagine your child has grown leaps and bounds during the summer and I can’t wait to see their faces and hear all about their summer adventures. If you are new to our learning community, welcome. This is an amazing place!
Here’s what we’ve been working on to prepare for the 2017-2018 School Year:
Cohesive curriculum: While the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme is the framework for our curriculum, the day to day instructional practices and content are written and implemented by our teachers and supported by our PYP Coordinator. As a staff, we’ve worked to strengthen our practices and create vertical (across all grade levels) and horizontal (within the grade band) so that our units of instruction are not only what’s best for the individual student, but what is needed for an Ogden student over time.
Our vision is to provide student centered learning through inquiry, grounded in global context and real life situations. We use this as our “stake in the ground” so that any change or initiative supports our end goal. We’re excited to improve upon our practices in the following ways:
Want to know more? We’ve scheduled a “Back to School Curriculum Night” for parents on Thursday, September 7, 2017 so we can tell you more about our initiatives for the school year, connect with our parent leader groups, and meet your child’s teacher! If you have a Kindergarten through 2nd grade student, you are invited to a 5pm presentation in the gymnasium with a visit to your classroom after. If you have a 3rd - 5th grade student, you are invited to the 6pm presentation in the gymnasium and a visit following. If you have both, you can plan to visit your child’s K-2 classroom at 5:40pm, attend the 6pm presentation with another visit after.
We’d also very much appreciate your support for our increased attendance initiative and for our scheduling change.
It is foundationally important that every child is in school when school is in session, and on time. I know as parents you want to support your child so he or she has a successful school experience. Being on time and in school does that (excluding staying at home for illness). School starts at 8:30am so please know that if your child arrives after the 8:30am bell, they are tardy. The building opens at 8:15am to give plenty of time to arrive before the 8:30am bell. We plan to push hard for better attendance this year.
Our schedule is changing!
We’ve listened to our parents and added new and exciting enrichment opportunities for our learners during the school day. Drama and dance will now be added to our rotation of special classes that still include gym, art, Spanish, and library. (We’ve “re-visioned” library to be the central IB learning hub of the school too.) Having six specials instead of five requires a change in how we schedule. We will have “letter days” to know what special is offered on each day. Don’t worry -- all the best schools do this! It takes a little bit of getting used to, but our students are worth it. We didn’t want to only offer five specials because of only five days in the week. In no time, we’ll all be running on our new schedule effectively! Viewing this change as positive rather than negative helps our children make the change.
In terms of enrichment, we’ve also asked our new partner Right at School to bring additional opportunities for enriched experiences during recess and after school (http://ogden.cps.edu/fee-based-after-school-program-right-at-school.html). We have been working to improve the recess experience as well. During the day, students will have a structured and intentional approach to recess, ensuring a safer and supported environment for everyone!
Finally, the most important message I wish to share with you, is that this new school year brings us unlimited potential and opportunity. There isn’t anything that we as partners can’t solve or improve upon together. We have the very best teachers and staff in the WORLD and your children are the reason we all want to be in school every day. I’m beyond excited to again support Dr. Beyer and all our learning community at Ogden East. I have no doubt that this will be the best year ever!
Please stay in touch. If you don’t find the answers on ogden.cps.edu or through our office (email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org), know that I’m here! (email@example.com).
Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Cheers!
Ms. Cara Kranz
Summer office hours: Monday through Thursday, 9am until 12pm
Enrollment: Do you need to enroll at Ogden for the SY2017-2018? If so, please register as soon as possible if you live within our attendance boundary. Feel free to stop by the office Monday through Thursday between 9am and Noon for assistance. Admission forms can be found on this site here.
Book Drive: If you have children's books at home that you would like to donate, please consider bringing any level of children's books to Ogden for our Back to School book drive. The PTA is sponsoring the drive to help build our K-5 teacher's classroom libraries. There are bins in the lobby of each school. Please drop anytime between 9am and Noon Monday-Thursday. Thanks for your support!
Supply Drop-off: You can drop your child's supplies before the 1st day of school to make your 1st day a bit easier. PTA parent volunteers plan to be at the East campus cafeteria on August 31, 2017 from 8:30am to 12:00pm to receive your supplies and to deliver them to your child's classroom as a service to you. (If you already ordered classroom supplies through the Friends of Ogden, no need to take any further action. Your child's supplies will be delivered directly to their classroom.)
We have moved to MailChimp for all school communication emails: We are no longer communicating via Constant Contact email blasts. If you are not seeing things coming out from Principal Beyer, you may not be signed up. Please begin by clicking HERE to signup for what email you would like to receive from Ogden. It is a 2-step process. It sends you a confirmation email to your account and then you have one more step from there.
Volunteers needed: We have had some amazing parents at East Campus help with Kiss-n-go in the morning. Unfortunately many of them are heading to West Campus next year. If you want to ensure we have a safe, orderly drop off next year, please volunteer! We allow daily drop-off volunteers to park in the garage, along with some other perks. Please contact Mr. Beyer or Ms. Kranz for more information.
