At Ogden International School of Chicago we are a community that challenges each other to grow, so that we all can thrive together. We are committed to building a learning environment that is creative, engaging, and challenging, while giving voice to all learners, both students and educators. We are living individual and collective lives of inquiry and constructing meaning within our communities. Together we advocate for the peaceful transformation of our world.
Inquiry: We question. As a school, we do not provide answers; we develop inquiry, curiosity, and inquisitiveness. Our school supports the lifelong learning of our students, and there are no boundaries between school and the world. Learning is living through relentless questioning and learning from error. Teachers carefully and intentionally create learning opportunities that offer multiple access points, allowing every student to share their knowledge and lived experiences, leading to a deeper understanding for all.
Inclusion: We are different and the same. As a school, we value the importance of including all students, as they are. We find the strengths of each student, allowing every person to contribute equitably. Our students are active members of the learning process and we know that education happens only when all students are given the opportunity to offer a meaningful contribution. We value diversity in all its forms and use it to enrich our perspectives. We believe that to be inclusive of diversity is to understand ‘alternative ways of seeing, being, and knowing.’ (Austin, 2012).
Collaboration: We support one another. Ogden International is a school that purposefully creates bonds between all learners. Group work, partnership, sharing, and respect are cornerstones of our classrooms. This is especially true when recognizing individual learner variability. We intentionally plan inter and trans-disciplinary curricula with all learners in mind to differentiate and accommodate individual learning profiles. Competition is reserved for extracurricular activities, while the school day is reserved for collaborative learning through personal and collective growth.
Growth: We are relentless. As a school we focus on the whole person: intellect and emotions. We understand how these two aspects of humanity are interconnected and interdependent, never able to be separated or ignored. We understand there are multiple pathways to personal fulfillment and success, and that growth looks different for each individual, but our collective success depends entirely on our mutual support of each other. As students construct their identities, they become empowered by their individual and collective strengths, nurturing their ability to practice compassion, kindness, and service as global citizens.
Global-mindedness: We are part of something greater. Ogden International’s curriculum is continuously revised to ensure it is reflective and connected to global and international issues. Through our international learning explorations, community partnerships, civic engagement, and diverse population, every student and every classroom strives to be part of the world community. We believe that shared encounters with people are the best way to learn about the varieties of human experiences and perspectives. Therefore, we value student voice in all pathways of learning, from language acquisition to art and music, while supporting the core academic subjects. We believe learning is an individual pursuit that affects the greater good.
Health and Wellness: We are balanced, healthy, and whole. Our inclusive curriculum, extra-curricular options, and social-emotional supports model healthy and responsible life choices. We promote personal health, knowing our community’s well-being is dependent on our individual and collective choices. We believe that building healthy and whole learners is an act of selflessness and generosity, mindful of our footprints and our impact.
At Ogden International School of Chicago we strive to become a community that challenges each other to grow, so that we all can thrive together.
